Product Description

Contrad® 70 from Decon Laboratories is a phosphate-free alkaline liquid detergent concentrate for laboratory cleaning. It contains anionic and nonionic surfactants in an aqueous base and is used by soaking, scrubbing, or ultrasonic cleaning.

Dilute the concentrate according to the cleaning task and material compatibility. The neat product has a pH specification of 12.7–13.8; this range does not describe diluted working solutions.

Thorough rinsing is an essential part of the cleaning procedure. Rinse cleaned items while still wet, using deionized or distilled water.

Applications

Laboratory Glassware Cleaning

Contrad 70 is used for cleaning pipettes, flasks, cuvettes, and sample vials. A 5% v/v solution in deionized water is recommended for routine pipette cleaning, followed by thorough rinsing.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Diluted Contrad 70 can be used in ultrasonic cleaning baths. Select the concentration and contact conditions for the contamination and confirm compatibility with the items being cleaned.

Wax Removal from Laboratory Equipment

For wax removal, the manufacturer recommends a 20% solution in hot water, with soaking for at least one hour followed by rinsing while wet. Confirm that the equipment tolerates the alkaline solution and cleaning temperature.

Dilution & Compatibility Considerations

  • Use deionized or distilled water to prepare working solutions
  • Avoid aluminum, zinc, copper, and other nonferrous metals
  • Adjust concentration and contact time according to the cleaning task
  • Rinse thoroughly while items remain wet
  • For instrument fluidics, follow the instrument manufacturer's cleaning instructions

FAQ

Click a question to expand.

1. What is Contrad 70?

Contrad 70 is a phosphate-free alkaline detergent concentrate manufactured by Decon Laboratories for laboratory cleaning. It can be used by soaking, scrubbing, or ultrasonic cleaning.

2. How should Contrad 70 be diluted?

Dilution depends on the cleaning task. For routine pipette cleaning, use 5% v/v in deionized water. Consult the Decon Laboratories technical sheet for other applications and contact times.

3. Can Contrad 70 be used in an ultrasonic bath?

Yes. Diluted Contrad 70 is used for ultrasonic cleaning. Confirm material compatibility and follow the manufacturer's application guidance.

4. Can Contrad 70 be used on aluminum or copper?

No. Avoid aluminum, copper, zinc, and other nonferrous metals because the alkaline solution can corrode their surfaces.

5. Can I use Contrad 70 to clean a flow cytometer or other instrument?

Follow the cleaning procedure for the exact instrument model, including the specified cleaner, dilution, contact time, and rinse sequence. General labware cleaning instructions do not establish compatibility with an instrument's fluidics.

6. How should Contrad 70 be stored?

Store at 20°C and do not freeze. Storage guidance for the concentrate does not determine how long a used cleaning bath remains effective.

7. Where can I obtain the Contrad 70 SDS?

Download the current Contrad 70 Safety Data Sheet for product 18417. It includes the skin-irritation and serious-eye-damage warnings, protective equipment, and handling precautions.
