Polyacrylonitrile, homopolymer (MW ~200,000)

Homopolymeric polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is a high-molecular-weight polymer known for its thermal stability, solvent resistance, and excellent mechanical properties. Its rigid structure, dominated by strong dipolar interactions from nitrile groups, results in a high glass transition temperature (~85-95°C).

Applications:

Carbon Fiber Manufacturing: The primary precursor in high-strength carbon fiber production.
Protective Coatings: Enhances chemical and heat resistance in industrial coatings.
Membranes & Filtration: Forms highly stable filtration membranes for water treatment and gas separation.
