Product Description
Polyisobutylene (PIB)
Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a hydrophobic, elastomeric polymer known for its excellent impermeability, flexibility, and oxidative stability. It is a saturated hydrocarbon polymer produced via the polymerization of isobutylene, resulting in an amorphous material with outstanding durability and resistance to environmental degradation.
The nonpolar backbone and lack of reactive functional groups contribute to PIB’s low gas permeability, high weatherability, and chemical inertness. These characteristics make polyisobutylene suitable for long-term use in demanding industrial formulations where elasticity and barrier performance are critical.
Key Characteristics
- Hydrophobic elastomer: Nonpolar, saturated hydrocarbon structure
- Low gas permeability: Excellent barrier properties
- High flexibility: Maintains elasticity over a wide temperature range
- Oxidative stability: Resistant to aging and environmental exposure
- Amorphous structure: Contributes to durability and weather resistance
Typical Applications
- Sealants & caulks: Provides long-lasting elasticity, adhesion, and weather resistance in construction and industrial sealing materials.
- Lubricant additives: Functions as a viscosity modifier and thickener in oils and greases.
- Medical & food-contact research applications: Used in pharmaceutical-grade gum bases and specialized packaging materials where flexibility and barrier properties are required.
