Batson's #17 Maceration Solution is a potassium hydroxide solution used to remove surrounding tissue from fully cured anatomical corrosion casts prepared with the Batson's #17 Anatomical Corrosion Kit. Controlled maceration exposes the cured polymer cast for subsequent anatomical examination.

The maceration procedure described in Technical Data Sheet 105 uses the solution at 50°C after the injected specimen has completely cured. Maceration time depends on tissue type, with soft tissue generally requiring less time than fibrous tissue.

Anatomical Corrosion Casting

Batson's #17 Maceration Solution is used after complete curing of specimens prepared with the Batson's #17 Anatomical Corrosion Kit. The solution removes surrounding tissue to expose the polymer replica of the injected anatomical structure.

Vascular & Anatomical Cast Preparation

The Batson's #17 procedure is used to prepare corrosion casts of vascularized organs and other anatomical structures that can be injected with the casting resin. Maceration is the tissue-removal step performed after the cast has cured.

Maceration Procedure

  • Allow the injected specimen to cure completely before beginning maceration
  • Place the cured specimen in Batson's #17 Maceration Solution at 50°C
  • Use a volume of maceration solution approximately 2 to 3 times the volume of the specimen mass being macerated
  • Remove the specimen every 2 to 3 hours and rinse with water to remove loosened material and permit further penetration of the solution
  • Soft tissue is generally removed within 12 to 24 hours under the documented procedure
  • Fibrous tissue may require several days of maceration
  • Replace the solution when it becomes heavily clouded with tissue debris if additional maceration is required
